Client: Mandale Homes
Location: Boy Lane, Halifax
Lynas Engineers was instructed to design infrastructure elements for Boy Lane housing development in
Halifax. The 29-plot development required detailed design for carriageways, footpaths, access, drainage, attenuation, foul flow and connections; as well as design of finished levels to balance cut and fill of materials and to minimise the height required for a retaining wall.
Access to the site was an early issue as it is situated on an incredibly steep crossfall (1 in 3) which impeded access to other partners on site. Lynas Engineers crafted an access solution, in partnership with Calderdale Local Authority that enabled all partners to safely and appropriately access the site to develop it. This included successfully developing an acceptable design during negotiation of the Section 278 agreement for modifications to an existing, adopted highway. The carriageway solution included the utilisation of a concrete/blacktop mix over a deeper dig model, saving additional costs to the client, but still providing the same effective access plan as requested.
The natural retaining wall offered issues with the cut of the materials to develop the site, but our team was able to design a wall height, without excessive hard digging to create a flush face and save the client further spend. Additionally, the team was required to overcome the challenges facing discharging into a Environment Agency main river and at a restricted greenfield run-off rate. Our team liaised with the Environment Agency to establish requirements from their teams and to obtain a Flood Risk Activity Permit.
