Client: AE Yates (On behalf of National Highways)
Location: Clifton Bridge – M6 between MP455/8 and MP456/2.
Project Summary:
Network Rail, in partnership with Skanska are replacing the Clifton Moor Railway Bridge that spans the M6 Motorway. In collaboration with National Highways, Network Rail established a site compound that adjoins the M6 via a temporary slip road arrangement. Skanska had programmed to start establishing their site compound in April 2025, which became a key date to complete construction of the slip roads.
The works were procured under the SDF Framework, of which AEYates are the Civil Engineering Contractor for the Northwest region.
AE Yates partnered with Lynas Engineers to undertake the design and build of the temporary slip roads.
Initially, Lynas Engineers liaised with National Highways to define design parameters for the temporary arrangement as site constraints prevented a fully compliant DMRB solution.
Lynas Engineers worked collaboratively with AEYates to provide design information ahead of programmed site works. National Highways were conscious of the potential risk for members of the public mistaking the works access as a Motorway exit, as such, the design had to provide the familiarity of a standard arrangement that was subject to a road safety audit, prior to opening.
Operating within a restricted programme, Lynas Engineers were able to complete the design period within six-weeks. This was made possible by working collaboratively with all parties and by the design team responding to change rapidly.

Challenges:
- Undefined standards for temporary arrangements on Motorways. Resolved by liaising and agreeing design parameters with National Highways.
- Restricted timescales
- Managing the various changes to scope
Sucessess:
- Strong collaboration between all parties throughout the project.
- Delivered on time, and to budget.
- Road Safety Audit raised no problems with any Lynas Engineers deliverables (TTM suggestions only).
